About

ScrapKins® is an NYC-based Creativity brand for kids that follows the adventures of a tribe of monsters ("ScrapKins") who build a world out of the things we throw away. Through school visits and Recycled Art-Making workshops, the “ScrapKins” teach children to turn milk cartons into pirate ships and towel tubes into dinosaurs by finding creativity in common materials. We have created programs for Whole Foods Markets, Seventh Generation, Clif Bar, The Doha Film Institute in Qatar, Make, Speakaboos.com, Wildlife Conservation Society at The Bronx Zoo, World Science Festival, Maker Faire and Scholastic Afterschool. Created in 2006, by children's designer Brian Yanish and based on his childhood drawings, the ScrapKins mission is to inspire creativity and DIY resourcefulness in kids everywhere.

Back and ready for more!

It has now been over a week since we have gotten back from Doha  and we have recovered (mostly) from jetlag, though we are still suffering from withdrawal. Needless to say, this was an amazing experience. But the best part of this trip is the knowledge that we have officially gone global. So while Doha will remain in our hearts as the first international trip ScrapKins has taken, it will be the first of many in the coming years. This has invigorated our senses and we are excited to explore even more events! Makerfaire NYC (another link) was amazing in Queens, the Bay Area Makerfaire took us across the country to California, and Qatar was unbelievably successful, so we would like to combine this local, national, and international experience by attending and presenting at more places around the city, state, country, and world! What’s next, you ask? While there are many plans brewing in the Scrap City pot, we are pumped for a busy weekend, attending the Brooklyn Waldorf School’s Winter Fair this Saturday, and the Hiptot Music Fest on Sunday! We’ll check back with updates and pictures, and if you want, you can hop on down to the fairs yourself!

Constantly re-inventing,

Itcher, Digger, and The Gang

  1. To recover from jet lag is a blessing. I alone have to consult with a sleep therapist in order to relax and finally get a good night's sleep. He even took my apnea hypopnea index to help determine the source of my sleeping problems.
